Introduction Project

This artwork explores the interaction between moonlight and deep-sea life, creating a rhythmic sense of tranquility through the flowing movement of jellyfish and schools of fish. The piece primarily uses cool tones to emphasize composition and spatial depth, while the soft glow of marine creatures serves as a visual anchor, drawing viewers into a surreal underwater world. This project also marks my first exploration of decorative elements, incorporating a wider range of patterns and textures to enrich the illustration.

Invisible cities

This artwork was created based on an original narrative concept. The main inspiration comes from the mirage-like feeling of a desert city, where the environment appears dreamlike and slightly unreal. In this project, I focused on turning an urban setting into a more decorative and imaginative space rather than a realistic cityscape. The project includes two illustrations that show the same environment at different times of day: night and morning. I explored how color palettes and decorative elements can change the mood of a scene. The night illustration mainly uses cooler colors to create a calm and mysterious atmosphere, while the morning illustration uses warmer, yellow-toned colors to suggest light, warmth, and activity. Through these two pieces, I practiced using color contrast, ornamental details, and environmental elements to add visual interest and depth. By combining structured buildings with flowing decorative patterns, the project aims to present the city as a lively and expressive space instead of a rigid, purely architectural environment.

Bright Hearts

This work is a narrative illustration project created as the cover for the short story Bright Heart. The cover explores the unsettling duality between the calm appearance of public spaces and the darkness hidden beneath the surface. An immaculate and inviting flower shop sits along a quiet street, radiating a sense of peace, while a forbidden inner space within the shop suggests secrets concealed from view. The illustration establishes atmosphere through vivid red flowers rendered with an unsettling, blood-like texture, hinting at the mysteries inside. Through the contrast between the tranquil exterior and the malicious presence implied in the shadows, the image creates a strong sense of visual tension and narrative intrigue.

Feast of Lights

This short animation celebrates the lively and vibrant atmosphere of the New Year while incorporating a deeper narrative about the passage of time. In this assignment, I explored both illustration style and simple animation techniques to support the storytelling. Through the perspectives of three generations—the quiet wisdom of the elderly, the curiosity of children, and the warmth of friends gathering together—the animation reflects different stages of life and how people of varying ages experience the New Year. The project further considers how the spirit of the New Year functions as a bridge connecting the past and the future.

Humans of New York

This project was inspired by the real-life story of a New York jazz singer, exploring the transformation and continuity of artistic identity across a lifetime. By contrasting the energy of youth with the calm elegance of later years, the illustration series examines how performance, environment, and time collectively shape an artist’s personal and artistic growth. Framed as a series of illustrations, the work highlights key events encountered at different stages of her life and the changes that emerge from these experiences. Particular emphasis is placed on the expressive use of color, with bright blues representing the joy of youth, deep reds and darker tones symbolizing moments of sorrow, and warm red-orange hues expressing the emotional maturity shaped by time. A thicker, more textured painting style is used to reinforce the passage of time and to convey the emotional depth of a story centered on the life and experiences of a mature woman.

Moutai series: Between Festivals and Spirits

This series of works was inspired by Moutai, China’s national spirit, using traditional Chinese festivals as its overarching conceptual framework. The series incorporates mythological creatures associated with each festival—from the Nian beast of the Spring Festival and the dragon of the Dragon Boat Festival to the symbolic imagery linked to Qixi, the Lantern Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival—merging ancient cultural symbolism with contemporary visual aesthetics. Through an emphasis on intricate decorative patterns and carefully constructed color schemes, the series conveys the distinct atmosphere and celebratory emotions of each festival, reinterpreting traditional culture within a modern visual context. I think this project is very meaningful to me because it is the first time I have combined my own cultural background with my artwork. This project represents an important stage in my creative development, as it helped me realize that this is a visual style I want to continue focusing on and carrying into my future work. It also inspired me to bring my cultural background more intentionally into my storytelling and narrative illustration.

Sylva

This postcard series centers on a little witch as the main character. The set consists of two illustrated front designs and one back design. The project explores how illustration can be adapted across different formats, with particular attention to color, composition, and the emotional connection between the witch and her cat. The two front illustrations depict a warm moment of the little witch enjoying tea with her cat and a quiet scene of the witch and her feline companion lost in contemplation. Through these intimate and delicate scenes, the series conveys a sense of warmth, stillness, and everyday magic.

Embers & Shadows

This bookmark series features a red-haired witch and her familiar spirit cat as the central characters. The work emphasizes a richly detailed decorative style, using purple as the dominant color palette to maintain visual cohesion across the series. It also explores how effective design and composition can be achieved within the limited format of a bookmark. The witch’s elegant presence and the cat’s playful, agile movements create visual contrast and interaction within the compositions, functioning not only as narrative elements but also as tactile artistic accents that enhance the reading experience.

Bright & Dark

This diptych explores emotional transformation through mythic symbolism. On one side, a white unicorn stands in a golden landscape, marked by quiet sorrow and restraint. On the other, a red dragon emerges beneath a darkened sky, fierce and illuminated by its own fire. The contrast between light and shadow, softness and intensity, reflects the tension between vulnerability and power. Rather than presenting these figures as opposites, the composition suggests that they are part of the same emotional spectrum—two states of being shaped by internal change. Through bold color blocking, textured gradients, and stylized forms, this piece reimagines mythical creatures as emotional metaphors. The work explores how strength can grow from fragility, and how transformation is not always destructive, but revealing.

Altered Self

This piece draws inspiration from the idea of cosmetic transformation. It explores the tension between external change and internal identity—questioning how altering one’s appearance can reshape self-perception, vulnerability, and power.

Informational Illustration Series

This collection focuses on translating complex information into clear and engaging visuals. Through structured layouts, thoughtful typography, and simplified forms, these works aim to communicate ideas efficiently while maintaining a strong visual identity. The series explores how illustration can function not only as decoration, but as a tool for understanding—bridging the gap between data, narrative, and audience.
